What is Purim and why do we celebrate it?
Purim is one of the most joyous holidays in the Jewish calendar, celebrated with vibrant traditions, costumes, and community celebrations. Observed on the 14th of Adar, Purim commemorates Queen Esther’s bravery in saving the Jewish people from Haman’s plot, as told in the Book of Esther. It is a time of joy, generosity, and gratitude for the miracles of the past.
Purim Traditions: How We Celebrate
Purim is known for its lively and interactive traditions, making it a beloved holiday for all. Here’s how it’s celebrated:
Megillah Reading – The Scroll of Esther is read aloud in synagogues, recounting the dramatic story of Purim. During the reading, groggers (noisemakers) are shaken loudly to drown out Haman’s name, symbolizing the defeat of evil.
Mishloach Manot (Gift Baskets) – A key Purim tradition and mitzvah of giving gifts to friends and family. Traditionally, these gifts are filled with nuts, candy, hamentaschen, toys and noisemakers.
Costumes – Dressing up in colorful costumes represents the hidden miracles of the Purim story. Many people wear masks and disguises, adding an element of fun and excitement to the holiday.
Hamantaschen – No Purim celebration is complete without hamantaschen, the iconic triangular pastries filled with fruit, chocolate or poppy seeds.
